First Dorset Credit Union, founded in 1999, is a Savings and Loan Co-operative, owned and governed by its members, and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. Its depositors are fully covered by the Bank Deposit Guarantee Scheme.
FDCU is a not-for-profit organisation. It employs an office manager but is otherwise staffed entirely by Volunteers, of whom there are currently c.120. Like all Credit Unions it has a 'Common Bond'; in our case it is the geographical 'bond' of living or working in West Dorset, Weymouth & Portland, and the Blackmore Vale (ie North Dorset and small parts of Wiltshire and Somerset). In North Dorset we have Service Points in Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Sturminster Newton and Blandford. Our members currently have over £1m on deposit with us, of which approximatley £450,000 is out on loan.
Gillingham's Service Point is currently located in the Community Office, 1 Chantry Fields, Gillingham, SP8 4UA (next to the library) Saturday 10.00 - 12.00 Wednesdays 12.00 - 14.00.
Later this year FDCU will introduce a Debit Card for its members (operated on our behalf by the Co-op Bank).
Savers with FDCU benefit from an annual Dividend distribution (when Payable). Borrowers benefit from unbeatably low interest, charged on the reducing balance of the loan. A Saver borrowing £300 and repaying in one year will pay only £38.21 in interest. (Provident Personal credit charge £246.00).
